Established in 1993, the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) is the oldest, private university in the United Arab Emirates. It is part of a community of flourishing international campuses founded by the University of Wollongong in Australia (UOW), a globally renowned university with over 31,000 students.
From humble beginnings opposite Al Mulla Plaza, to our current location at Dubai Knowledge Park, UOWD has become recognised as an integral part of Dubai’s academic landscape.
Over the last few decades, the University has established itself as one of the most prestigious universities in the UAE representing a vibrant, dynamic and diverse culture with a proud Australian heritage.
UOWD is a world leader, held in high regard by its students, alumni and the business, government and community sectors. We integrate teaching, research, community and business links at regional and global levels to add value economically, socially and culturally.
Since our inception in the region, UOWD has focused on contributing to the UAE’s ambitious nation-building agenda and has worked to deliver innovative, high-quality programs. The University has grown alongside Dubai and the region.
Today, we have more than 350 staff and 4,200 full-time students. We offer more than 35 accredited undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses in Business, Finance, Computer Science, Engineering, International Studies and Media & Communications. In addition, UOWD’s Language Studies Centre (LSC) offers a wide range of general and pre-tertiary language courses and communication development programs.
The Arab Investor Magazine (AIM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Wollongong in Dubai to collaborate in the development of excellence awards in the United Arab Emirates. This initiative was developed by a series of meetings between Mr Nazim Mohammed Al-Sabah, CEO, Expert and Business Advisor and Investor for the Arab Investor Magazine (AIM), Professor Mohamed Salem, President of the University of Wollongong, Australia, and Professor Barry Mahoney, Dean of the University Business School. These fruitful meetings have created the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of both parties to enhance excellence in a number of sectors that are important pillars of the vision of the United Arab Emirates.
The School of Business at UOWD will help develop a framework, guidelines and evaluation criteria for excellence awards for each sector by taking advantage of the teaching staff’s experience in master’s program of relevant disciplines and quality management. The awards will be moderated by a panel of independent academics and experts in various fields.
UOW is currently one of the Top 10 Universities in Australia and in the top two per cent of universities worldwide.
Ensuring that we continue to build on that success, all of our programs are quality assured by the Australian Government Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA), and are licensed and accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs, through the Commission of Academic Accreditation. This means that our students and graduates can be assured of the highest quality standards, consistent with current international best practice in academic instruction and assessment; learning environment and resources; academic and professional staff. All of our academics hold doctoral degrees in their fields of expertise and are active researchers, which provides cutting edge curriculum insights.
Furthermore, our students have a very unique exposure to Australian higher education standards in a local and regional context. Our students also have the opportunity to spend a semester at our UOW Australia campus, giving them a truly international experience.
We have developed a longstanding reputation for academic excellence. UOWD is considered a benchmark for educational establishments in the region: dynamic, agile, innovative and praised for the quality of our teaching and research.
Developed by key industry stakeholders, all of our programs are industry focussed and constantly reviewed to stay up-to-date with issues that influence the rapidly changing areas of business, engineering and information sciences – regionally and globally. Our aim is to ensure that our graduates are work-ready and can immediately add value to industry, government and the professions on graduation.
We believe in providing our students with a real-world experience and the opportunity to develop and apply the skills they have learned throughout their time studying at UOWD.
Uniquely, all of our academics hold doctoral degrees in their fields of expertise and are active researchers.
With the UAE being a popular destination for expatriates, UOWD represents a haven of multiculturalism. We currently have more than 4,200 students on campus, representing an astounding 117 nationalities. We are proud to provide them with an international learning experience, and enable them to value cultural diversity. Besides encouraging our students to excel academically, we also host various student events to enhance their university experience.
UOWD has its community’s educational needs at heart. Through regular workshops, competitions, and other activities we provide the student body with a glimpse of what to expect when they commence university life whilst having fun. Such activities include our annual Mathalon and Robotics competitions as well as our Tech-G initiative; a summer camp, which provide school girls with practical, real-life experiences in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and arts. We often have guest speaker visiting our campus, including Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist, who encourages and motivates them to follow their ambitions.
Commitment to our students is evident in our graduates, who are recognised for their capability, quality and success in the global workplace. Our students are provided with numerous opportunities to secure their futures with some of the best local and international companies in the UAE.
Our graduates are sought-after by leading local and international companies and, with their newly acquired and comprehensive skill-set, many of them climb the ladder to senior positions quite rapidly.
We strongly support the region’s vision to encourage innovation. At UOWD, innovation, entrepreneurship and excellence are our three core focus points which are reflected in both research and program curriculums. We strongly encourage our students to participate in projects which will unlock their innovative potential.
The GCC has one of the fastest growing student populations in the world and there is a growing demand for occupational courses such as nursing, engineering, aviation and public service. Having launched three new programs since 2016 including the new Executive MBA, we also plan to launch a number of new programs in 2017 and 2018. The University has broken ground for a 200,000sqft dedicated building. The new state-of-the-art campus will provide our students with the best facilities possible to enhance their student experience and increase our international footprint within the UAE.
